They've been doing the McCafes in Australia for a quite some time now (I saw my first one when I was there 3 Christmases ago - and they were well established feature then). On the other hand the coffee shop drip style coffee has never really been done in Oz, rather they've even in the smallest greasy spoon/fish and chips shop gone the European style of 'proper coffee'. Interestingly enough, while there are a couple of chains of good coffee shops there "Gloria Jean" and "Coffee Club" but Starbucks are very rare there (although they do have a few).

And on the Australian note, this TV special was run in Australia recently, and is available for download in a number of spots:
<i>"COFFEE CRAZY is a fun and exciting journey with Australia’s WORLD CHAMPION Barista PAUL BASSETT to discover the world’s perfect cup of coffee! In a humorous & action packed adventure, Paul plunges into the fascinating world of coffee taking us to Rome, Naples, Amalfi (where the Cappucine Monks invented the famous Cappuccino), Paris and then Oslo where he finds coffee to die for. Coffee is hot! Not just because it is the biggest traded commodity in the world next to oil, but it is a drink that truly reflects the culture and lifestyle of its drinkers. Going where no ordinary Barista has gone before, Paul demonstrates how to make his exotic award winning signature drinks and designs tantalizing Latte Art. COFFEE CRAZY is a tribute to world’s greatest drink, hosted by the world’s greatest Barista!"</i>

My husband found the download at rapid share, but if you look around you might find it elsewhere.... worth keeping an eye open for - it's been a very enjoyable watch

I saw my first McCafé on the way to Boston last weekend... a stand adjacent to the McDonald's at one of the highway rest areas. Only one brewed coffee, alongside the fancy machines that I'm skeptical the counter staff had any idea how to use properly.

I do miss the separate Lavazza stand at the Thruway rest area 40 minutes from my parents' house near NYC; that, too, seems to have been folded into the McDonald's. They had great coffee, and I didn't care that McDonald's owned them.
